Tasteless, part 47 in a series...

(to beener), Sarah Palin could go for some good exit poling
(to beener), necoro says, "What, like anal?"
(to beener), Josh laughs.
(to beener), Sarah Palin wheels in the whiteboard and pulls out the
puppets for necoro
(to beener), Josh gets out the drilldo and drills, baby drills.
(to beener), necoro says, "I supposes that's what passes for birth control
in her world."
(to beener), Sarah Palin can see a condom factory from his house...
(to beener), necoro says, "Made of baby seal skins for exquisite pleasure."
(to beener), necoro manages to squick himself.
(to beener), tanman says, "The skin is especially soft and responsive if
they're shot from a low-flying plane."
(to beener), necoro wishes he had finished lunch first.
(to beener), Josh laughs.
(to beener), Josh wonders if you call those 'blubbers'

Lowe's "Portfolio" 120670 Track Lights: Why they suck
These Flared Step track lights look pretty good, and in the bronze finish they match our dining room chandelier pretty well.

"$14.98! Can't go wrong for this price!" Except... you really can.

These just plain didn't work on our existing (Halo) track. Huh, these tend to be universal, but we'll try a new track.

Another trip to Lowes and an hour later, new track is hung... and only one in four of the fixtures works.
"Okay, WTF. These are getting returned, but I want to open this up and see why they suck first!"

Turns out the weak point is the handy-dandy built-in switch that you will never use anyway. Their design is such that they rely on a not-springy-enough piece of brass to make contact in two points, at either end. Except the switch rocker deforms or twists this part in such a way that it may pull away from one end or another. Crap materials or just cheap design?

It turns out that this switch was apparently retrofit to the existing contacts in a design revision - the hot contact still has a terminal on it where you can reconnect the hot (black) lead internally.

If you can get the lead off without the whole switch coming apart you can just move this wire, or more likely the thing will come apart - you remove the switch rocker, the contact bar, and the existing terminal and contact on the black wire. Reassemble, reconnect the hot wire, and there you go. Wedge all the its back into the base and it should work - no cheap-ass Chinese moving parts to go wrong. (Only cheap-ass Chinese fixed parts now!)

Now the funny thing is, this $15 Lowes fixture looks an awful lot like a fixture from Juno - and indeed, the Lowes one is made by Juno. I woner if the $52 Juno one is any better internally.

I'll also add that I had to remove and reassemble the socket in one of these to get the bulb to point straight. All in all, these things suck, and you probably should avoid buying any track light fixtures from Lowes if you can afford it.

MySpazzzz hotlinkers = scum

At one point I noticed the webserver was eating up all the upstream bandwidth... looking at the logs I found it was predominantly MySpace users hotlinking to one of a couple images.

I could have removed/renamed that image. Or been nice and resize and resample it to a smaller file. But I'm not nice like that.

First step: Just deny them access based on their referer:

 SetEnvIfNoCase Referer "^http://www\.example\.com/" local_ref=1
 SetEnvIfNoCase Referer "\.livejournal\.com/" local_ref=1
 <FilesMatch "\.(gif|jpe?g|png)$">
  Order Allow,Deny
  Allow from env=local_ref
 </FilesMatch>

That returns a 403 for *.gif, *.jpg, *.jpeg. *.png if not referred to from our local domains or LiveJournal. Ah, but we can do better:

 RewriteEngine On
 RewriteCond %{HTTP_REFERER} ^http://([a-z0-9]+\.)?myspace\.com/ [NC]
 RewriteRule \.jpg$ http://collect.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=signout [R]

This very sneaky idea I found at http://www.jibble.org/myspace-hotlinking/ and I think it's brilliant for those of us who can't stand the blight that is MySpace. If you're referring from anywhere @myspace.com, and request *.jpg, the URL for that JPG request will be rewrittem to the MySpAz Logout page. Buh-bye!

So kids, this is why you don't inline link to external content that you don't own. Not only are you stealing other people's resources (space, bandwidth, power) that we pay for, but you have no idea what us fuckers are going to inject into your page.

Obviously, rewriting to say, a link to Goatse.jpg would be very easy, but I'm *just* nice enough for that.

You scored 10 Honor, 6 Justice, 2 Adventure, and 5 Individuality!
You are a soldier of the night. You rely on no more than your cunning and your repuation to strike fear in the hearts of lord and peasant alike. You've a sense of honor, but one that comes from within, not imposed from outside.

Black clothes and shuriken for you. You're gonna do just fine.

I will add that OkCupid's HTML generator is retarded and that it took more effort to cut and paste their 2400 character long single line of HTML than it did to take the test. I will kill them in their sleep.

I too am a cute animal.

Maybe someday I'll put something more interesting in here. For now, more silly blog meme things.

You Are A: Kitten!

kitty catCute as can be, kittens are playful, mischevious, and ever-curious. Like you, kittens hate getting wet. Kittens are often loving, but are known to scratch or bite when annoyed. These adorable animals are the most popular pets in the United States--37% of American households have at least one cat. Whether it is your gentle purr or your disarming appearance, you make a wonderful kitten.

Extracting IPs of mail relays sending to non-existent addresses
This should read a sendmail maillog and produce a list of relay IP addresses which have caused a 550 error (usually invalid recipient address) three or more times over the timespan of the logfile.

grep "reject=550" maillog | awk -F "[" '{print $3}' | sed -e 's/\].*//' | sort | uniq -c | awk '{ if ($1 >= 3) print $2}'

Step 2, make it into a DNS zone for use as a dnsbl.

sweet!
I'm a bit of a sucker for "engineering intensive" space projects. So when there was noise about one of my favorite proposed projects, the Jupiter Icy Moons Orbiter, I was pissed. Well, rumors of its demise have been apparently exaggerated, because now we have the new Project Prometheus page. From which I've stolen the new graphics (hey, taxpayer dollars, I own them too!)

In other news, we're back from Japan, we had a great time. Except now I still seem to have whatever infection I caught our last couple days there... waking up after midnight hacking and coughing. Take cough medicine, fail to get back to sleep, repeat.

I'm trying to get back to a normal sleep schedule, as well as shifting my work hours to 8am-5pm so I can actually use the extra daylight hours. And maybe attempt to actually get things done after coming home. This monkey SARS crap isn't helping any.

Ok, trying to go back to sleep now.
